How to Hook a Laptop to a PC to Use Windows Briefcase

    • 1). Close any files that you wish to transfer with your Briefcase. Double-click the "Briefcase" icon to open it, dragging any files that you wish to include into the Briefcase window. Click the "Update All" button to ensure that you have the latest version of your files in the Windows Briefcase.

    • 2). Turn on your laptop if it isn't already. Insert one end of the Ethernet crossover cable into the PC's Ethernet slot, and insert the other into the laptop.

    • 3). Wait while the PC and the laptop identify the simple network that has been created between them. Network identification should take less than a minute in most cases.

    • 4). Open Windows Explorer on your PC by clicking "Computer" or "My Computer" in the Start menu. Navigate to the "Network" portion of the folder listing, expanding the shared folders that are listed under the laptop's name.

    • 5). Drag the Windows Briefcase icon to the shared folder that you wish to place the files in and release it. The Briefcase will automatically move itself to the laptop, along with the file copies that it contains.

    • 6). Disconnect both ends of the crossover cable once the move is complete. The cable can be used again to reverse this process when you want to move the Briefcase back to your PC.
