The newcomers in the arena of graphic design make a lot of mistakes. It is not their fault; rather it's an inevitable part of learning new things. You are bound to commit some mistakes and learn as you have more experience. Learning from mistakes is a good thing but you should try to avoid basic mistakes. Sometimes even the experienced designers do some mistakes that they should never do.
Here I will discuss 10 common mistakes that rookie designer should avoid.
Design without any research- Often graphic designers start working on a design project without gathering information from the client. Before starting any design you should meet with the client and learn about his business, his brand identity and future plans. Unless you have a proper idea about the company how can your design reflect their identity? The brief you get from the client is your guidebook. You can refer it throughout the design product to shape up the design as your client wants it to be.
Target audience? I don't care- Why your client wants you to design a webpage? Because he wants you to create a design that will send the message to his target audience effectively. Hence, if you ignore the target audience your graphic design will be meaningless. You should create a design that will connect with the target audience. You should analyze the likes and dislikes of the target audience to make the design successful. If your design looks too €elegant and costly€ middle class people won't check out your products which may be quite cheap, and vice versa!
Verbal agreement- Never commit this mistake. A client can promise to pay $1000 and run away after the design is done! Whenever you get a new project maintain a contract paper. What things you are ordered to do and how much the client will pay for it, must be written in the contract with both parties signature. I am not saying that every client is cheater but you should take caution and keep the process professional.
Avoiding contact- Some graphic designers don't realize the importance of communication in a successful project. If you don't communicate with the client he will feel ignored and assume that his work is not done properly. You must stay in touch with the client throughout the project, take his inputs and modify the design as per his requirement. Unless you communicate and take feedback, you will face criticism from the client after finishing the project.
Not maintaining the deadline- When the client gives you a deadline he expects the finished design will be delivered to him on the pre planned date. Some designers like to delay the project and when the client asks for the design they pass a bad design as €minimalistic design€. If the clients realize that you can't maintain deadline and lazy, they will never come back to you.
Ignoring latest softwares- Graphic design is progressing at a rapid speed and new technologies are introduced frequently. Photoshop and InDesign are not the only softwares that you need for great graphic design. A good graphic designer should remain up to date and adapt newer technologies.
